Poppies and Pineapples

Hi girls,

It’s Jill Marshall here, and I am very, very happy to be writing to you on this SPECIAL DAY.

Some of you may know me from my books about sensational spylet, Jane Blonde. What you may not know is that I write lots of other books, too, sometimes under a different name so I can reach new audiences. Under the pen name of Mia Castle, I love writing for teens and young adults who are maybe a little older than Jane Blonde readers – or are JB fans who are all grown up!

And why is this a special day?

Poppies at the Tower of London

Well, it’s Remembrance Sunday. Every year on the Sunday closest to 11/11 (or 11th November, sometimes called Armistice Day), we gather to remember the many people who have fought in wars all around the world

This year it’s an even more important Remembrance Sunday, as it’s 100 years since the First World War began. People across the globe are paying their respects to the millions who were involved.

For me, this Remembrance Sunday is about commemorating why all those brave men and women went into battle. They were often very young – just teenagers – and yet they set forth to stand up bravely for what they believed in. To serve their country. To do what they felt was right.

They fought for our freedom today in the here and now, and particularly as girls and young women in 2014, I think we should show massive appreciation for how their strength allowed us to lead our lives of opportunity and equality.

One year ago, on Remembrance Day 2013, I started writing a book about all of that. It came to me in a flash as I walked my dog around town and saw hundreds of men and women, bowed and dressed completely in black, apart from the scarlet poppies on one lapel and rows of medals on the other, honouring the courage and determination of past and present.

The story that emerged also links then and now, through the everlasting power of love. That story is called Pineapple. Now, one year later, I’m paying my respects in my own way, by giving away free copies of the Pineapple ebook for a fortnight from today. You don’t have to sign up to anything. It’s just a gift. I hope you enjoy the book, and every moment of your life that has somehow been shaped by people just like you, a whole century ago.

Just go to Pineapple ebook and follow the links.

  1. PS And I forgot to say, if you read Pineapple and you’re trying to picture what Robbie Penhaligon looks like (and why wouldn’t you?!), I think he’s exactly like George Ezra! Jill/Mia x
